I’m a British-American artist and writer in Philadelphia, USA. After studying fine art and art history, I spent many years in writing roles for artists, art magazines, museums, and universities.
During the pandemic, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that continues to significantly limit my energy. Now, I’m learning—inch by inch—to live and work in new, sustainable ways.
Bio
Educational Background
I received a BA (Hons) in fine art painting from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. My MA (distinction) in history of art at the University of York was supported by an Arts and Humanities Research Council research preparation grant. With the help of a grant from the Association of Art Historians, I presented my thesis research on the abstract painter Agnes Martin at symposia.
I took additional studio and theory classes at the Royal Drawing School, London; the Cooper Union, New York; and the Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. At Penn, I also enriched my creative practice through graduate-level classes in English literature, ancient history, and ancient Near Eastern languages.
Art Writing
I’ve published contemporary art writing in Artforum, Art in America, and frieze, among others. For many years, I was a contributing editor of Art Papers. I participated in the CUE Art Foundation Art Critic Mentoring Program and the Warhol Foundation Art Writers Workshop, a program of AICA-USA and Creative Capital, both in New York.
After this, I embraced projects that enabled a more personal narrative approach to art writing. My critical writing project on Moyra Davey, for example, started with support from The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation. My exhibition essays “A gathering, a sensuous meeting of thinking bodies” (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts) and “The thing that has been there” (THIS MUST BE THE PLACE) continued this exploration.
Museums and Galleries
I have held full-time positions at the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology—both at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. I received a Getty Foundation grant to explore digital storytelling in museum collections through the Harvard MetaLab Beautiful Data summer institute.
I was a member and served on the board of directors of storied artist collective Vox Populi, Philadelphia. Before this, I belonged to Core Gallery, London.
While an art student, I cherished every moment spent in the cuneiform tablet Study Room during my internship at the British Museum, London.
